I was a partner in London law firms for many years. In 2003 I was invited to join a client in the travel trade to set up an in-house legal function. This experience was a revelation to me. I was effective as a commercial lawyer in a way no external law firm could ever be. My deep understanding of the business meant that my advice and actions went straight to the point and dealt with the issue and the commercial concerns of the business. Don't get me wrong - I believe that law firms are very good for some types of legal work: sizeable transactions; litigation; copper-bottomed advice on critical strategic issues. Law firms are less effective when it comes to the business' day-to-day activities where familiarity with the commercial concerns of the business are essential.

So I am a poacher turned gamekeeper turned poacher again. I founded Robin Baron Commercial Lawyers in 2007 with the vision of providing the principal benefit of an in-house lawyer, namely knowing the business better than any external adviser can, but on a consultancy arrangement. This may be on a one day a month basis or say for six months full time or any other sensible arrangement that a client wants. It may encompass a general counsel role or be to manage a specific project such as an acquisition, a disposal, due diligence, an outsourcing or a piece of litigation.
